LUCY. THE FIRST GAHGOON.

Porter Lori is an artist,musician and the creator of GahGoonz.

Raised in Colorado and Kentucky an only child to a single mother Porter often spent his time alone while his mother was at work. While it may have been lonely at times it also offered the opportunity to thoroughly explore his imagination and curiosities. As a child Porter took the city bus to and from school on his own and spent much of his time by himself in the house and around the trailer park where he lived. The old saying “You don’t miss what you never had” comes to mind because Porter wasn’t aware of all the luxuries that were afforded other kids so often and found himself quite content with what he DID have. His greatest toy was (and still is) his IMAGINATION. The long unkept grass along his house became a seething jungle teaming with unknown dangers for his G.I. Joes. Every bookshelf became a new level of challenge that required expert climbing skills where action figures dangled by just one finger over the shelf just underneath! Shoestring ropes were tied from trees to car bumpers creating amazing zip lines across neighbors yards for Transformers to surprise their enemies from out of the sky!

Its his belief and trust in the constant engagement with his imagination that has kept him creating into his adult life.

One day Porter was shopping in Downtown Los Angeles and stumbled upon a large wooden giraffe sculpture. It wasn’t anything special. It was a tchotchke mass produced in China made to look like something authentic from a “far off distant land” (I guess China IS far off and distant technically). In any case he needed something for his loft and it was $25 so he bought it. After a few months it became painfully obvious to him how much he resented the fact that he was an artist with this piece of what he likes to call “McArt” protruding from his living room floor and none of his own work to show. Porters first idea was to cover the giraffe with bright yellow-painted nails pushed through black latex that covered the statue. Within a few months the latex began to dry and peel and the original giraffe came shining through in all its mediocracy! One evening while helping a fashion designer friend of his at her warehouse he happened to see a large bag of scraps that were clearly intended for the trash. The bag was filled with different colors and sizes and shapes and somehow didn’t look ready for the trash so he asked if he could take it home. A few months after bringing the bag home Porter was watching a movie and just happened to look over at the still latex-shedding giraffe sculpture and then glanced over at the bag of threads and fabric. It was at this point that fate, destiny, and most of all curiosity and imagination found the perfect outlet and for the next 3 weeks Porter sat cutting, sculpting, weaving and knotting what would become his very first GahGoon “Lucy”!!

For Porter GahGoons are the manifestation of everything he is and believes in. They represent creative abundance from modest materials. GahGoonz represent who “WE” are as humans. We are the sum of all our parts. Our history, our present, our hopes, our success’s and our failures. Were as humans wear these emotions on the inside, GahGoonz share their stories on the outside for all to see and experience. Every thread and feather came from somewhere. To just look at them requires that you engage your imagination and for some its been far too long…

GahGoonz are meant to Inspire children & remind adults. Creativity, imagination, and curiosity are the building blocks of architecture, fashion,music, and science! Without those feelings and the individuals who have chosen to to not only embrace them but advance them we would have a much different world and NOT for the better.

THERE IS A GAHGOON WAITING SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU! Each GahGoon is handmade almost entirely of recycled materials and impossible to re-create. There are no 2 GahGoons the same. Whichever GahGoon you choose will be the only one of its kind in the entire known universe! Therefore when you pick it up and decide to take it home you have not only chosen IT, IT has chosen you!
